BIID

BIID

This article was particularly interesting. It offers many different sides to whether or not the way we see ourselves is a disease or a trait that we are born with. The disease that is being talked about in this article called, “Cutting Desire” by Jessie Ellison is know as BIID or Body Integrity Identity Disorder. The meaning of this disease is when someone has a very strong urge to cut off or amputate a perfectly healthy limb or body part. To many people this would seem strange and very absurd but to the people that are diagnosed with these symptoms feel the need to do this because they believe their body isn’t right with that body part attached to their body and once it has been removed they have a sense of relief and feel that is the way they should have been made.
It’s really hard to say what type of treatment a person with BIID should get as mentioned in the article. The first thing I would say is the best treatment to get would be therapy, where you can talk about your problems or maybe figure out what’s the deeper subconscious reasoning for this thought process to occur. That treatment may not work for a more severe case. They normally try to get rid of their unwanted limb in any way possible so talking many not work. This may mean that more invasive methods may need to be taken like getting put into a mental institution before you harm yourself and the people around you. In the article it states, “In studying the hinterland between neurology and psychology, we can tell not just about people with conditions themselves, but how all our brains work.” What this is saying is that now they think patients should go to Neurologists to get treatment because scientists are becoming involved in the situation saying that by studying the brain they can determine if you were born or hard wired with this trait. These are all extremely different treatment methods that could help a patient with BIID are free from their horrible thoughts.
The idea that someone is choosing to be “disabled” or “handicapped” is kind of heartbreaking to me because I know even though they say they cant help these thoughts it still makes me think of people that are actually disabled. Many people each year are either born disabled or in a freak accident became disabled. I bet if you talked to anyone of those people they would tell you that they would give up anything not to be handicapped. Meanwhile perfectly healthy people are just cutting off their limbs as they please. Maybe if someone that was diagnosed with BIID talked or observed someone that was actually disabled they would see that its not as enjoyable as it may seem.

Health

What is “Health”? Health can be described many different ways depending on who is giving the description. Due to the following evidence given to us through Christian Bale in American Psycho and Roxanne Edwards in “Roxanne Edwards is Superhuman”, we see a different dynamic that can question the reader to have two different sides to the notion of being in good health. Christian Bale portrays a man named Patrick Bateman , who focuses too much on his physical appearance with his numerous amounts of products he uses and the high paying job. He may seem normal on the outside but inside he is just an empty space that is filled with rage. Roxanne Edwards is the total opposite of the character Patrick Bateman. Her physical abilities allow herself to be confident and proud of what she has accomplished. Her mental state is stable because she has learned to appreciate what she had. When you are physically fit it can correlate to having a positive mental state but it can also become so obsessive that your mental capability of feeling is only found deep in your subconscious.  This is what I discovered while I was researching the topic of “Health.”
Everyone knows that one person that will look at himself or herself too long in the mirror or someone who just thinks they are better looking than everyone else. The person that perfectly fits this description is a man named Patrick Bateman. Technically he is a character in the movie American Psycho. At first sight many women would say that he is very attractive but little do they know that underneath his perfect physique is a cold blooded cereal killer. How does this relate to “health” you may be asking yourself? Patrick Bateman corresponds to the side of health that proves physical stature takes over the mind and leaves it empty. What I mean by that is Bateman uses every type of cosmetic product such as deep pour cleansing wash, exfoliating gel scrub, herb mint facial mask, after shave lotion with no alcohol, moisture, anti-aging eye balm, and a final protective lotion. This all seems a little OCD for a man to have a morning routine that would probably take a few hours to complete. It just isn’t normal.  After this descriptive scene the director Mary Herron adds, “Although I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe sense our lifestyles are probably comparable, I simple am not there”(Herron). This quote is the exact message I am trying to send. It basically says that even though someone may look very clean cut and put together on the outside such as Bateman with his designer suits, fancy penthouse and custom business card, it doesn’t mean they are the same mentally. Bateman tries to over compensate for the way he feels mentally by sleeping with different women and doing cocaine with is friends in the bathroom of a club. Inside they can be insecure, disorganized and a little insane which is the opposite of their appearance. This proves that physical health does not automatically mean your mental health is the same.

There can also be more radiant ad happier side to health that leads people down a very successful path. They learn to love and cherish life through their health experiences. Roxanne Edwards is a prime example of a person that loves whom she is inside and outside. The way she looks reflects her personality. Her interview with DISmagazine explains her reasoning for the way she looks. She talks about how her motivation for getting physically built was because she wanted to look good naked. She wanted to be happy with her own body before showing it to the world. Many people may think the pictures she takes are very controversial but to her she is just showing the world all the hard work that she put into her body. In the interview, “Roxanne Edwards is Superhuman”, S. Adrian Massey mention, “The world is set up to tell you what you can’t do, who you cant be, and what you cant look like. Your job on this planet is to tell them who you are, why you’re here, and what you’re capable of doing”(Massey). This quote is a pure representation of Edwards’s confident and carefree personality. This shows that her mental state is very stable and isn’t altered by anyone and this came to be like that because of the way she physically looks.

Body Builders

Body Builders

After reading the article, "Against Ordinary Language: The Language of the Body" by Kathy Acker and listening to the interview named “Roxanne Edwards is Superhuman,” I’ve gained a whole new perspective about bodybuilding. I always had an opinion about body builders. I always knew they had to go through a lot to get to the way they look and have worked very hard for the body that they have. I resect what they do very much but personally after listening to the interview and looking through all the pictures, I have generated some new thoughts. What really struck me when I was looking through all the photos from DIS Magazine was that in class we talked about how John Berger’s famous quote was, “Skin without biography." The quote means that everybody had a story that can be told from their skin like scars, birthmarks, stretch marks, freckles, tattoos and piercings. Once I saw the pictures of Roxanne I realized that muscles can also be a way to tell a persons story about how they live there life everyday. I could always tell that bodybuilders would obviously need to have a planned and healthy diet. Roxanne talks about how she takes multi vitamins to keep her body on track and how many bodybuilders do have a day-to-day planned meal. Also a main thing that I noticed from the interview was that to me Roxanne seemed a little over confident. She states, “The people that actually don’t like me are the ones that are out of shapes.” What this reminded me of was our discussion in class about how a part of Patrick Batemen’s personality from American Psyco was very over confident and thought he was better than everyone else. Also how he was self obsessed and overly crazed about the way he looks. Just like how Roxanne thinks that her body is so ideal that anyone that wouldn’t like her appearance must be someone that is out of shape. Besides her over confidence what I really found shocking was when Roxanne was talking about women bodybuilders still trying to be feminine. She said, “They expect the women would obviously has all this muscle to still have breast and then judge her against someone that go an implant and say you weren’t feminine enough.” I was really surprised when she said that the judges takes points off for not being feminine enough because what comes with being a bodybuilder is an abnormally large body with huge muscles and veins popping out everywhere. This is normally not seen as the socially acceptable body for a female. They are seen as dainty, small and fragile. After listening to Roxanne say that it reminded me about an event that occurred in my middle school. In middle school most girls are growing and developing which can cause many girls and even boys to become self-conscious. A girl named Emily had a locker next to me and I could hear her talking to her friends and she seemed upset. She was saying that another girl was making fun of her because she was shaped weird and didn’t have as big of breasts as the other girls. This came to mind because people shouldn’t be judged on their outside appearance if they are feminine enough. People that may not look very girly can still like to do girly things. So hearing Roxanne say that should remind people not to judge people before you get to know them. This all relates back to bodybuilding because even though they may look manlier on the outside doesn’t mean they aren’t feminine.
